Spool Hop

Wonderful, beautiful, talented Christine from One Kiss Creations sent out some vintage wooden spools, she tossed down the gauntlet and said "make something".

First I wanted to saw the biggest spool in half, maybe with the very vague thought of doing some embroidery.  The idea seemed innocent enough, but my electric mitre saw was just too much for that little spool.  I almost had it in half when "pop" a piece went flying across the garage, never to be seen again.  Sigh.  Lucky I had a few more to play with.  Not one to give up on power tools, I pulled the drill out . . .

Cabochon, anyone?

I picked up a ball of hemp and had an attempt at macrame.

Funny thing, that hemp is strong.  All the pulling to get the knots tight gave me a blister.  I had to laugh because I split 1.5 cords of wood in the last month with no blister.  The clasp was made from a carnelian bead that was part of the spool package.  Love carnelian.

This second piece in no way is some hidden debasement of these spools, its all about appreciating the little things in life.

Did you know toilet paper was first recorded in China in the 6th century and was actually mass produced in the 14th century?  I had no idea it had been around so long.  According to Wikipedia, before the more standard TP existed wealthy people used wool, lace or hemp.  Less wealthy people used various materials such as rags, wood shavings, leaves, grass, hay, moss, plant husks, etc.  "In Ancient Rome, a sponge on a stick was commonly used, and, after usage, placed back in a bucket of saltwater."  Yikes!!!   Like I said, this is about appreciating the things in life that we generally take no notice of.

I feel extremely fortunate to know Christine and am having fun getting to know more about the other ladies in this hop.   I'm fascinated by these pixilated threads that span space and time, connecting people in so many different ways.

Here are the early finishers:

And these are the ones yet to come:

Hurry up ladies!  I want to see what you make :-)

Rant

Beware.  I am going on a rant today.  And it has nothing to do with beads. What started it was an article on the front page of the NY Times yesterday, "Mannequins Give Shape to Venezuelan Fantasy".  When I first saw the below photo I did a double take.  Is this a mannequin for a porn store?

The article was about a recursive loop of flesh and blood women undergoing cosmetic surgery, and the evolution of corresponding fiberglass stacked mannequins.  The store front window then becomes a taunt for unaltered women to step in line with a new cultural norm of beauty.  I have long abhorred rail thin fashion models and mannequins, but this is ridiculous.

In the article, a woman who made these mannequins was quoted as saying she wanted a boob job someday, because "it gives you better self-esteem".  Can you really get self esteem with a scalpel and some silicone?  Well, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2012 at least some of the 330,631 American women who had breast augmentations must have thought so.

October Fest

Welcome to the October Fest Blog Hop!

Today my post will be short as the participant list is long and you need time to hop.

I made one bead embroidered piece.  My inspiration for this piece was a tornado.

I wanted to capture pent up energy.  The whirling, swirling unpredictable motion of wild winds.  I'm not sure I managed that.  Now that I look at it I see a fire dancer instead.

This is my first raised bead embroidered piece.  There is a piece of rope sewn down under the beads of the body of the funnel.

A HUGE thank you to Rita at Toletc Jewels/Jewel School Friends for putting this hop together.  Here are all the other lovely participants, if you prefer they are all listed on Rita's blog as well:

Not Just Any Old Rock

I received a wonderful package in the mail from Christine at One Kiss Creations.  It contained, amongst other things, a rock that I fell in love with.  There is no explaining love.  To some it might seem an ordinary sort of rock but to me it was magic.

At first I tried to seed bead bezel it.  But, I wasn't happy with that.  So I got out the old drill and put a hole through it.  Then what?  Argh.  No color seemed right.  I pretty much tried everything.  And then I really did try "everything", and to my eyes it worked.

I made tubular seed beaded beads of different lengths.  I put some old colored glass beads in between.  Once it was finished and I really took a look at it, I realized while I was stitching away muse was working behind the scenes. Tricky girl.  She was gathering all the wonderful colors of spring, summer and fall to carry me through the upcoming gray and dark winter. Daffodil and sunflower yellow.  Rhubarb and strawberry red.   Lilac and velvety iris purple. A slice of bright blue sky. Glowing fall orange. Too many greens to mention.  So I love this necklace. When I get up this winter, in the dark on a day when I struggle to get up and off to work, I will put this necklace on.  I will wrap my fingers around it and remember all those beautiful colors, and that will nourish me until spring comes.

Thank you Christine <3
Now if I can only figure out what to do with those spools . . .

Sequintastic September Hop

The Fantastic Sarah Sequins is having a blog hop.  Yeay Sarah!  Yeay Sequins!  Who could resist that beautiful sparkle and shine?  Obviously not me.  Did you know sequins even have a Wikipedia page?  It's not very long, but it states "evidence exists that gold sequins were being used as decoration on clothing or paraphernalia in the Indus Valley as early as 2500 BC".  Ladies, we are making HISTORY.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequin

I've never actually used sequins in my bead embroidery, so this was a challenge.  I bought a rainbow of colors, because they were so darn pretty.  However, I only ended up using one color, my very favorite sequin color, silver.

My original thought with this piece was a whirlpool.  I think it ended up looking more like a space galaxy thing.  My muse has chosen blue lately.

I wasn't sure what to do with this piece and then while I was at the Salvation army a few days ago I found a nice wooden box ($1.50) that seemed the perfect size.

And although I haven't actually glued it on yet, it fit quite well.

This is a bit off subject.  I thought it was a fun idea to trace what this box originally contained.  It says Leigh White Neckwear.  I figured that was some kind of tie.  Indeed, Leigh White is a designer that did limited edition unique art neckties.  I found a few images.  The one on the bottom left is called "Electric Chair" which I thought was kind of an unusual subject for a tie.  I wonder which tie was in my box  . . .

Thanks for stopping in my little corner, and a huge THANK YOU to the wonderful and dynamic Ms. Sequins for giving us all an opportunity to sparkle and shine.  Here is the list of sequentastic creators.  I can't wait to hop around and get my dose of beauty for the weekend.
