<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last year I decided to grow milkweed. Milkweed is the only host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars. Monarchs are having a rough go of it, in a lot of places their numbers are steadily declining. I choose two types of native milkweed, narrow leaf milkweed (<i>Ascepias fascicularis)</i> and showy milkweed<i> (A. speciosa</i>). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My 2019 milkweed journey had some ups and downs. When I found caterpillars on the plants I was quite excited. But, none of the caterpillars seemed to survive. One day they would be munching away, and the next day they would be gone. Just gone! I learned later that the survival rate "in the wild" can be as low as 5%. Out of at least 15 caterpillars only one actually made it all the way to the stunning butterfly you see above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This year my milkweed plants have been growing well. A couple of months ago I again started seeing caterpillars on the plants. But, just like last year, they were disappearing. I did a little reading, and found out you can take either the eggs or the caterpillars inside, which gives them a much higher survival rate. Starting with the eggs is the best way to get healthy caterpillars. So, I went on the hunt for butterfly eggs. Once I knew what to look for, I found them. </div>

April is National Poetry Month in the United States and Canada. It was started in 1996 in the US to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry. Sharing my love of poetry seemed a natural, so for the month of April I anonymously put poems on the large bathroom mirror at work. These are some of the poems I taped on the mirror. <br />

<br />
After a couple of rejections from the SB Art Association, I thought I'd give it one more try. I talked myself into having hope that the Abstract Art Collective might be more open minded about defining "art". So, I brought three pieces to their live jury day in April.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcKYq3jOZMzoqLE5jVr6ndhz0j0uEUcWYqL3W045ZKkYFLFwJztF5iTTsWdykSodRMU56o75WC1NoKK9kpd0OicfkMEZkqFchhc1vEoNe3pehkGDquGw5W9O7DsOitDw10lo6pYZLirgrF/s1600/Within+%2528detail%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcKYq3jOZMzoqLE5jVr6ndhz0j0uEUcWYqL3W045ZKkYFLFwJztF5iTTsWdykSodRMU56o75WC1NoKK9kpd0OicfkMEZkqFchhc1vEoNe3pehkGDquGw5W9O7DsOitDw10lo6pYZLirgrF/s320/Within+%2528detail%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
From my brief experience, it seems that people who work in
abstraction are more open minded. Instead of being branded with the label "craft" and sent on my way, I was instead welcomed and accepted as a
member! <br />

I've just finished two pieces to donate to the <a href="http://abstractartcollective.com/see/" target="_blank">SEE Fundraiser</a>. All the SEE pieces are done on 10 x 10 inch wooden studio panels, which
worked out perfectly, that's such a good size for my stuff. <br />

My creative process is currently being tempted by multiple sparkling visions swirling around. But, as soon as I try to grab one, it dissolves into mist. I have to remind myself to be patient. Those ideas are not ready yet. Their time will come.<br />

It was a worthwhile effort, but the SB Art Association wasn't interested in admitting me. This time was worse than the last time. During round one (back in March of 2017), I at least got one "yes" vote. This time, all three judges said no. Two of the judges indicated what I did was craft and not art. Yep, back to that again. The third judge commented my work did not 'draw her in'. Time to close the chapter on this adventure. It has become obvious I do not belong there. </div>

My experience makes me wonder where I do belong. A few months ago, I found myself wandering through a show put on by the Abstract Art Collective. While it wasn't immediately obvious to me, a seed was planted that has slowly started to sprout and grow. I'm now committed to submitting my stuff for their live jury day. These are two new pieces I plan to submit.</div>

<br />
I'm beading slowly, as I find the time. Until just recently I'd forgotten how good it feels to be productive. I just finished two of these three pieces. By finished, I mean completely finished -- framed and able to hang on the wall. I'm quite lax at taking the final steps to finish my work. Once the fun part is done I loose interest, and move on to a new piece. Bad habit. I'm going to try to remember how good it feels to have things 100% finished.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
These three pieces, all 10 x 10 inches, and are my second effort at becoming a member of the Santa Barbara Art Association. I've made changes since the last time. I've incorporated a suggestion
from the prior go round, and am using uniform frames. I'm going to call my
medium "assemblage" and not embroidery. Assemblage is a recognized
"fine art" while embroidery has strong craft connotations. <br />

<br />
I have a friend who lives a few towns over. Between us, in the mountains, burns one of California's largest wildfires, the Thomas fire. It began on Dec 4th and is still going strong. It has burned 252,500 acres so far. There are currently 8,369 fire personnel, 1,012 fire engines, 32 helicopters, 78 dozers, and 62 water tenders fighting the fire. One firefighter has lost his life.<br />
<br />
As a tribute/reflection on this fire, and all the herculean efforts to contain it, my friend created a Christmas card I wanted to share. She is a talented and creative artist. <br />

This piece contains a bonanza of buttons. 90+ buttons, actually. I guess I don't suffer from koumpounophobia, which is a fear of buttons. According to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Button" target="_blank">Wikipedia</a>, a famous sufferer of koumpounophobia was Steve Jobs.<br />

A few years ago I would not had the nerve to use so many buttons in a single piece. I would have felt it was a waste of precious buttons. But, I have given myself permission to use things I've hoarded. While collecting is fun, using the stash is even better! <br />

I re-purposed an old clock for the frame, which made me realize (yet
again) that I don't like to put my work behind glass. I probably will
end up removing the glass, but I'll live with it a while to see if it
grows on me. <br />

<br />
I found a bag of mother of pearl buttons at a thrift store recently. I hit the creative jackpot. I love buttons. Best $4 I've spent in a long time. When I started sifting through them at home, this mandala insisted on being born. I thought about covering all the holes,
but I've decided I like leaving many of them open. No need for disguises. It's okay for a button to be a button. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7FvA4-AKsZTF9wA-AmA6GaUsUlOyIFu81_zVMi_zLV0D-hkBMd_CUJt_hb3lrt_98GUJrVWOLAAMAXOCwuERDsQ-zwWLYa54p_aDY4DhkgWCLWZ0Hdj9dt6_hWUfdCKsfCgVOASdxn8MY/s1600/P1040369.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7FvA4-AKsZTF9wA-AmA6GaUsUlOyIFu81_zVMi_zLV0D-hkBMd_CUJt_hb3lrt_98GUJrVWOLAAMAXOCwuERDsQ-zwWLYa54p_aDY4DhkgWCLWZ0Hdj9dt6_hWUfdCKsfCgVOASdxn8MY/s320/P1040369.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
But, now I feel like the center button needs a little something . . . <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhctr6Oui7Ry7Txgp9lJbNW0z2psQsk43cukc7INpcc7UI2DDi60vIK3g9-9loxvS2fW7hAwT9PiiTzRwaA45Up2LbF31PqM3ppFPV98Vl6WBWv3qD4LIdrA5C4NrpbhytGv0o9eLPX0OeN/s1600/P1040382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhctr6Oui7Ry7Txgp9lJbNW0z2psQsk43cukc7INpcc7UI2DDi60vIK3g9-9loxvS2fW7hAwT9PiiTzRwaA45Up2LbF31PqM3ppFPV98Vl6WBWv3qD4LIdrA5C4NrpbhytGv0o9eLPX0OeN/s320/P1040382.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Maybe a second button layered on the top? I came up with a couple of choices:<br />
<br />

Which one is better, A or B?<br />
<br />
I have one more button piece in progress. It has 92 buttons!<br />

<br />
I ran across this small piece of spiral rope in one of my bead boxes. Poor little thing never even made it into the UFO box. I think I considered it more of a "sample" than a UFO. It dates back to June 2014 and the blog hop A Time To Stitch (ATTS) 5 hosted by <a href="http://onekisscreations.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Christine</a> and <a href="http://theresestreasures59.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Therese</a>. I liked it, I did. But, a mere three inches in and I experienced rope burnout. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaveQvyza6AdrbSmk4H0IF-RFcVZVu0ANT4j0_Jp7psx5idBLV4z24k9OF7sjV2GIvccZLBacVR2ZaVqKp6kQo2F9V0NV5m8dQQqO7HS1EaHgfKdJhg5euslyKQqr473Wo2YX-D9vOzZc-/s1600/P1040003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaveQvyza6AdrbSmk4H0IF-RFcVZVu0ANT4j0_Jp7psx5idBLV4z24k9OF7sjV2GIvccZLBacVR2ZaVqKp6kQo2F9V0NV5m8dQQqO7HS1EaHgfKdJhg5euslyKQqr473Wo2YX-D9vOzZc-/s320/P1040003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Not wanting to take it apart I decided to turn it into a hair barrette, my latest beading obsession. I
don't make much jewelry, so when I feel an urge to adorn myself with
beads I might as well use hair barrettes. My standard hairdo is, after all, a
ponytail. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOHPy1S9mZaFUarpMkINnDMpb08-5PSEsNk7PAcW9Ezv1enzDcnjvAfm_68iDIfnqeHmpRNAzx_K3LOetS8FxjU6Kn4y33nF343QCb6zKzEtsMQzKihHNnPwfEHM5LCcZWTWmbAAkMUHi3/s1600/P1040125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOHPy1S9mZaFUarpMkINnDMpb08-5PSEsNk7PAcW9Ezv1enzDcnjvAfm_68iDIfnqeHmpRNAzx_K3LOetS8FxjU6Kn4y33nF343QCb6zKzEtsMQzKihHNnPwfEHM5LCcZWTWmbAAkMUHi3/s320/P1040125.JPG" width="240" /> </a></div>
<br />
I might as well go ahead and show a few of the other barrettes I've made in the last couple of weeks. Some of them are simple, and others get a little
wild.<br />

This next one is my favorite. I dug into my stash of 10+ year old
Delicas (lined dark blue cut, no idea if they even make this color
anymore). These beads shimmer like water at sunset -- blue, silver and
pink.<br />

I feel a little guilty I didn't do more on the UFO front. But I guess sometimes we just have to go with the flow.<br />

<br />
I find I get more enthusiastic about making pieces when I have something to work towards. It could be a blog hop, a gift, or an art show - it doesn't matter, I just need a purpose. Therefore, I decided to submit three pieces for the Santa Barbara Art Association's (SBAA) most recent jurying for membership. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1a1iVQuERfUri3sArTtFM7ZXFYB4qPozfCWaKfNzc-g02RAt6585U41a2JukpctrOn9b_Lo0sRra0nwO61u9t_vGeT2HBoX0ZGKh6calrH-xvc652DgLNsgJ5NurNcfu8ApcXnebxb1g/s1600/P1030823.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid1a1iVQuERfUri3sArTtFM7ZXFYB4qPozfCWaKfNzc-g02RAt6585U41a2JukpctrOn9b_Lo0sRra0nwO61u9t_vGeT2HBoX0ZGKh6calrH-xvc652DgLNsgJ5NurNcfu8ApcXnebxb1g/s320/P1030823.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The main reason I like the SBAA is because they display their shows in a large public space in the same building as the public library. I am a tremendous fan of public libraries, and also for making art accessible to everyone. A lot of people who might not otherwise have the time or interest to go to art museums/galleries have easy access to the SBAA shows. <br />
<br />
The process required three pieces. One of them I already showed pictures of on this blog, but for purposes of a complete story I will show it again.<br />

These are all bead weaving combined with bead embroidery. <br />
<br />
So what happened?<br />
<br />
When I went to pick my work up I received a blue card. That's the reject card. I was told I could get feedback from the judges (anonymously of course). This is what they said:<br />
<ul>
<li>The first judge said no because they thought what I did was craft and not art. </li>
<li>The second judge said no because they didn't like the presentation of my work. They didn't like the frames.</li>
<li>The third judge was a yes. </li>

The rules are if two judges vote yes you are accepted. The next open juring is in September. I'm not going to decide yet if I'll try again . Maybe I will, maybe I won't. For bead lovers, it's the party of the year.<br />
<br />
My partner was the lovely and very talented Hannah Rosner, from <a href="http://goodrivergalleries.com/" target="_blank">Good River Gallery</a>. When I looked at her work I was simply blown away. She has been beadweaving since 1986 and lampworking since 1992. She began teaching both lampworking and beadweaving in 2000. She has participated in Battle of the Beadsmiths, the Toho Bead Challenge, and so much more. Was I intimidated? Well, maybe just a little. But, I had a bead I absolutely loved that needed to go into expert hands. With Hannah I hit the jackpot!<br />
<br />
I sent a few little things, but the main event was a bead based on a
painting by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphonse_Mucha" target="_blank">Alphonse Mucha</a>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I bought this bead at my local bead store,
and for all the great love I felt for the bead, I never knew what to do with
it. I was told it was Japanese, hand painted on ceramic. It is one of a kind, signed by the artist. I can't wait
to see what Hannah did with it.<br />
<br />
So, now on to my journey. Hannah sent many beauties that I am not finished playing with. Ahhhhh the joy! <br />
<br />

<br />
The first thing that caught my eye was the gray and black banded agate, which I combined with a piece of driftwood and a wooden hoop to make into a wall hanging. The agate is quite translucent and the light shines through it just beautifully.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
There was no question that I would also use the second agate slice, the red one. I loved the color, so warm and deep.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I ended up making a heart patterned after <a href="http://lovebeadlove.blogspot.com/2017/02/amor-by-anne-hesse.html" target="_blank">Amor by Anne Hesse</a>. Even though I'm not particularly fond of hearts, I like this piece.<br />
<br />

<br />
I still have the fossil to play with. Who knows what it will become. Thanks Hannah for being a great partner. Once I'm done at <a href="http://goodrivergalleries.com/blog.htm" target="_blank">Hanna's blog</a>, I'm going to go head over to <a href="https://barbarasfernald.com/" target="_blank">Barbara Fernald's</a> blog. Barbara was Hannah's second partner and makes some very amazing stuff. I particularly like her use of tumbled beach rocks. <br />
<br />
A giant thank you to Lori Anderson for once again making this happen. Nothing better then spending my Saturday morning with a few cups of coffee and <a href="http://www.prettythingsblog.com/" target="_blank">160 bead blogs</a>. <br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><a href="http://blog.baublicious.me/2017/01/want-to-join-ufo-support-group.html" target="_blank">Karen at Baublicious</a> has organized a Facebook group, as well as a blog hop, focused on completing at least one unfinished object (UFO). I signed up in mid-January, and in the interest of honesty will report I didn't actually stitch a bead down until <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">three</span> days ago. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I've had this UFO for a couple of years. </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love the
cabochon, and had a box I was going to glue <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the finished piece to</span>. But, for some
reason, it remained frozen as you see it for at least two years.
Rummaging through my box of UFO's about a month ago I realized the problem was
the oval shape I cut the foundation out of. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSva8zy4oTtXa6Y9Iu4uU8qcCyC6aNWkxtY5gQYwAp5Px4nE9uQrUeknEf5VrU_DmMc-zf_2eA-Z8teh-9mfj8-eIkQin_CXiK19GjtIOKeO2jYY_SaClpmUC4ZKhDPoNy6y7rxdfoY0GZ/s1600/P1030751.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSva8zy4oTtXa6Y9Iu4uU8qcCyC6aNWkxtY5gQYwAp5Px4nE9uQrUeknEf5VrU_DmMc-zf_2eA-Z8teh-9mfj8-eIkQin_CXiK19GjtIOKeO2jYY_SaClpmUC4ZKhDPoNy6y7rxdfoY0GZ/s320/P1030751.JPG" width="320" /></a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then, along came <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">some</span> love. Marcia DeCoster started a new blog called <a href="http://lovebeadlove.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bead Love</a>. In her inaugural post, she elucidated the mission:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"I felt some of the joy slipping away from me this year as I watched
world events and I wanted to find a way to put as much love into the
universe as I could"</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I am a firm believer in love. When I saw the post from Feb 21, <a href="http://lovebeadlove.blogspot.com/2017/02/amor-by-anne-hesse.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BeadLove+%28Bead+Love%29" target="_blank">"Amor" by Anne Hesse</a> I knew what had to be done. </span>

How long does a piece have to sit around to be an official unfinished object (UFO)? For some reason I think about a year. If a piece is less than a year old it's just 'in progress'. This piece is borderline. It's been sitting unfinished for somewhere on the order of 6-8 months. It was all done except for the "white stuff" which I started to find tedious (there is a lot of it, the dimensions inside the frame are 7.25 x 9.5 inches).<br />

I'm debating submitting some of my work for membership jurying to the local art

submit.<br />

<br />
Karen at <a href="http://blog.baublicious.me/" target="_blank">Baublicious</a> is offering a helping hand. Like an angel from heaven, she has reached out with a desire to help suffering artists. Karen has graciously put out an invitation for artists who may have an
unfinished piece or two (or ten, or a hundred) to get in there and
deal with them. We artists can be a sensitive lot. Personally I feel shame and embarrassment regarding the sheer volume of unfinished work I have accumulated over the past few years. What an opportunity, to deal head on with my box of half finished "stuff". Thank you Karen!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQa0zae8_PSyv6tj4KHNmN5PeznRfs6tsj1YToiDzH4nDJFOPaqdbcFguBdLcDj4OeLjn3jFHpSqL3UYpqJIrnHCymMZ8roHCjKr71WW8qbYrLunASjd413DzRIHW5qjIwtPmy0YzBlci7/s1600/P1030736.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQa0zae8_PSyv6tj4KHNmN5PeznRfs6tsj1YToiDzH4nDJFOPaqdbcFguBdLcDj4OeLjn3jFHpSqL3UYpqJIrnHCymMZ8roHCjKr71WW8qbYrLunASjd413DzRIHW5qjIwtPmy0YzBlci7/s320/P1030736.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is my UFO Box. Maybe it doesn't look scary to you. But when I look at it I break out in a cold sweat and my sphincters clench. Lurking inside are all my orphan children. Showing you this next picture is absolutely terrifying for me. I feel so vulnerable. But, I can do this. Shedding light on dark corners is a good thing. Here are some of my UFO's.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Vy2c6LxQldL99b2TDOYMwhIsejLo-5EsbIyBMnu3GWdh1Yppjchhv79DPAjgUoI5ojPfevEr-IgYn0KKM3UyrxQ2m_sF5tKW8T_1Z2lrpE9SnIp4i1y73WOpoPWeGe5WUCecgHe0L7wn/s1600/P1030741.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Vy2c6LxQldL99b2TDOYMwhIsejLo-5EsbIyBMnu3GWdh1Yppjchhv79DPAjgUoI5ojPfevEr-IgYn0KKM3UyrxQ2m_sF5tKW8T_1Z2lrpE9SnIp4i1y73WOpoPWeGe5WUCecgHe0L7wn/s320/P1030741.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Some will get cut up. Some I really think deserve to be finished. It's time to confront my orphans and make some decisions. I appreciate the fact that Karen calls it a support group, because this ain't gonna be easy. But, I'm taking the first step and I invite you to come along as well. Together we can do this!<br />
<br />
Sign-ups are through the end of January. The first Finished Object Blog Hop is March 11. Go straight to <a href="http://blog.baublicious.me/" target="_blank">her blog</a> <b>now</b> and sign up! You will feel a a great sense of relief. I know I did.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Tomorrow, November 13th, is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Kindness_Day" target="_blank">World Kindness Day</a></span><br />
<br />
This is a special day to focus on the good and pass it forward.<br />
<br />
I'm not sure what I will do to celebrate. Having a day set aside is a good reminder to embrace the spirit of kindness. The more often we are kind, the more effortless it becomes. We also have to remember to be kind to ourselves. I don't mean go out and buy yourself a new pair of shoes. I am talking about letting go of something you've been beating yourself up over. Kindness begins with me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1eHWdv_CzJfHoP6jArZBNMXoq6iJr1liU-GgyYN0uudS08zy3mxxCaTZwa7tbR_L0S2r143CBy1dmXR8mXVwbRehwRbC2aYSezVxCXEdK2yTQb6PVclgaS2aESfjGMOEVsrm3zI2HX4-Y/s1600/P1030489.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1eHWdv_CzJfHoP6jArZBNMXoq6iJr1liU-GgyYN0uudS08zy3mxxCaTZwa7tbR_L0S2r143CBy1dmXR8mXVwbRehwRbC2aYSezVxCXEdK2yTQb6PVclgaS2aESfjGMOEVsrm3zI2HX4-Y/s320/P1030489.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
These are a few of my favorite kindness quotes:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. <span style="font-size: x-small;">-Mark Twain</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
<li>A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love. <span style="font-size: x-small;">-Saint Basil </span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
<li> Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate. <span style="font-size: x-small;"> -Albert Schweitzer</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
<li>You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. <span style="font-size: x-small;">-Ralph Waldo Emerson</span></li>
</ul>

I like to look at all the different things covering the rocks of the intertidal zone. The intertidal zone is the area underwater during high tide and exposed during low tide. It's a very harsh environment, as you may imagine. In the course of a day it is submerged in water, pounded by the waves, and also completely exposed to the air. <br />

A group of jellyfish is called a <b>smack </b>(can also be called a bloom, smuck, swarm, or fluther). <br />
<br />
A school is a general name for a group of fish, and a shoal is the name for a group of bass. Here are a few others: A battery of barracudas, a cast of crabs, a swarm of eels, a glide of flying fishes, a shiver of sharks and a flotilla of swordfishes. Whew!<br />

When I was a kid I used to draw made-up animals, I can't remember them
all but I do remember the "elefish", the head of an elephant on the body
of a fish. Well, the rocks the ocean tossed out to me have been transformed into
made-up creatures of the sea. It was great fun to reconnect with my inner child. <br />

<br />
I've moved to California, where I go beachcombing every chance I get. I found a nice quiet spot that always has glass and shells, and also made a new friend. She is a fellow beachcomber and is teaching me all about the nuances of beach glass. She is my glass sister, I made this necklace for her.<br />
<br />

<br />
This is the <i>first time</i> I pulled my beads out in <i>two months</i>. Maybe my muse has finally come out of hiding. I hope so! I want her to stay with me. I need her to help me figure out what to do with all the treasure I have found so far.<br />

I've noticed a lot of my beautiful bead sisters have been quiet lately.
Time changes our relationships, not only to each other but also to
things, like our blogs. On a selfish note, I hope you can re-kindle the
interest in your blogs, as they have enriched my life. But, I also
realize there is a natural time for moving on. If the road leads to new things, than I can only express thanks for the time spent, it
was well worth it.<br /> <br />

If you haven't heard of them, there is a website that explains it, where you can actually buy little libraries to put up: <a href="http://littlefreelibrary.org/">http://littlefreelibrary.org/</a><br />
<br />
This is the first one I found, and it's still one of my favorites. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihptmtviRcu2jlL0lsw5h3DybKOzyFI9YU8tLgiVRMDNnVGpk-B8WV19xwoOee8O6LYGvL-5e4Tm4O7U0xwf6mUqqgOiWkPX_5Rxp6lPWGHkWSWWDvy7Ytw-AaeYTczuxuzJflSVCzPvAj/s1600/car+library.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihptmtviRcu2jlL0lsw5h3DybKOzyFI9YU8tLgiVRMDNnVGpk-B8WV19xwoOee8O6LYGvL-5e4Tm4O7U0xwf6mUqqgOiWkPX_5Rxp6lPWGHkWSWWDvy7Ytw-AaeYTczuxuzJflSVCzPvAj/s320/car+library.jpg" width="287" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I found close to a dozen Little Free Libraries within a 10 mile radius of my house. Some were bough off the website, and some built by the owners. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqeQcNdcdEHAT26FufeKr5Fi-4o55b-4FCmYxxhN29Y41vaoLF7leV_6N7J3W7cpcAhoQLJJltUBKjvK8shyc877TYtMoxEuaJCi46223puwKwfeMjylpjOVP5zjBpnJi5orE-bElf0O7n/s1600/two+free+little+libraries+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqeQcNdcdEHAT26FufeKr5Fi-4o55b-4FCmYxxhN29Y41vaoLF7leV_6N7J3W7cpcAhoQLJJltUBKjvK8shyc877TYtMoxEuaJCi46223puwKwfeMjylpjOVP5zjBpnJi5orE-bElf0O7n/s320/two+free+little+libraries+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I always enjoyed ones that had quotes or slogans about reading.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjERZppuR3nkvQdrHqf8_RbGNN7u6mXRyTaSLRQykSYuc9M6HOvDDiKZtqek3CdgDwjfRP3eu1tbpvowjGA39NiIYsiSb9e7DJ5gmxJT13QOhvBlo2OBZASyx7Fl2KedwTC58cys5IwtDu0/s1600/quotes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjERZppuR3nkvQdrHqf8_RbGNN7u6mXRyTaSLRQykSYuc9M6HOvDDiKZtqek3CdgDwjfRP3eu1tbpvowjGA39NiIYsiSb9e7DJ5gmxJT13QOhvBlo2OBZASyx7Fl2KedwTC58cys5IwtDu0/s320/quotes.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

I think this little phone booth came from the website. <br />

This last one was made by the owner from thrift store materials. When I was taking my picture she came out and we talked about it. It was hard to photograph with so much glass, but it really is lovely.<br />

Everyone who I spoke with about the Little Free Libraries loved them. They seem to provide a neighborhood with a sense of community. I read quite a lot of books, and usually give them away after I'm done. Maybe it's time I build my own Little Free Library. <br />

It's called Vera Cruz.<br />

<br />
I did a little research and found out it is the brain child of architect <a href="http://www.jeffsheltonarchitect.com/" target="_blank">Jeff Shelton</a>. He handed out panels to local artists and asked them to make paintings.
Shelton also painted some of the panels himself. <br />

<br />
The paintings were
done with UV paint and have a special coating, but eventually will age and need to be replaced. I love the idea that you can paint the outside of your house one rectangle at a time. And I think it's wonderful all those local artists contributed their talent. <br />

Welcome to another A Time To Stitch. These are always such fun blog hops, I never want to miss one. I knew I wanted to do a fully beaded amulet bag, but for the longest time I couldn't figure out exactly what. I rummaged through my old, dusty box of Delicas -- loom or peyote? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
An elaborate pattern wasn't going to work, so I went with a patchwork feel
using 3-drop peyote (which just like regular peyote but you pick up
3 beads at a time). It was the perfect choice as I didn't have to pay
too much attention. </div>
